SciOly 2017 – WOW!

Bay Academy SciOly 3rd-Gen was quite a team! You took us from 15th to 11th overall in NY State – beating out the other 250+ Middle School teams in New York State! You were a force to be reckoned with in the world of Science Olympiad. You knew this was true when people were talking about Bay Academy as we walked through the halls of competition sites. Each and every one of you did more than you thought possible and more than we could have hoped for. I was in awe of you and inspired by you at the same time (so yes, you earned the grapes!) And I thank you for your determination and grit – also for the beautiful banner you made for me – and yes, if I had tear ducts, I would have cried 🙂

Do not forget your SciOly roots, or that we want you to to be part of the teams and coaching staff next year. Our goal is to place in the Top 5, but we need you to get there. In high school, you will be busier than you ever dreamed you could be, but even if you gave the 4th-Gen SciOly Nerds a few days here and there to help guide and direct them, you would be making a great contribution to Bay Academy. So pass it forward when possible!

Peace and Love to all of you – Dr. C and all the SciOly coaches who have made it very clear that you are leaving behind a very large pair of shoes to fill!

(And SciOly boys, if you have any graduation pics you would like me to add to the Photos album, just forward them along).

Are you READY?

Are you ready for all the exciting science events that will be taking place and hosted by the Science Department next year? We are! With our new website (and weekly updated calendar shown here!) you can see what Events, Competitions & Contests are coming up next – all the way to next June! Remember, 90%+ of the events are going to be open to the entire student body here at Bay Academy and you are all invited to participate. Invitation only competitions are the Science Olympiad and the NYC Science Bowl. For the dozens of other exciting times, go to the calendar, look at all events and see what might interest you and how to register – no matter the talent you are in. We will also be posting events that will be happening in and around the NYC area to keep you busy over the summer and prepare you for next year. Enjoy!

Bay Academy Rises in the Ranks!

The Bay Academy Team has once again proven themselves as top contenders at the NY State SciOly Competition. Our awesome competitors medaled in 6 of the top 10 events (3 out of 10 last year)…

  • 3rd Place – Scrambler
  • 4th – Towers
  • 6th – Food Science
  • 9th – Anatomy & Physiology
  • 9th – Reach for the Stars
  • 10th – Wind Power

We also moved Bay Academy from 15th Place team (last year) to 11th Place in NY State this year! (*We actually did place 10th, but received a small penalty that cause us to be moved back one place. Live and learn.)

I am very proud to be the head coach for this great team. They all deserve a big round of applause! Kudos to fantastic coaching, photographing and chaperoning by Mr. Kheyfets, Mr. Zeleniy, Mr. Soeur, Mr. Davis, Mr. O’Neill, and our good luck charm, Mo the bus driver, who got us here safe, sound and on time!

Special thanks to all those who helped make this a successful competition: Mrs. Timo, Mrs. Dalton, Mrs. D’Agosta and all those students who worked so hard to help us get here! What’s up for next year? New events (Potions and Poisons, Roller Coaster and more!) and a goal of top 5!! See you back here next year!

Bay Academy takes 2nd Place in NYC SciOly… moves onto NY State competition!

Our 2nd full year of competing in the Science Olympiad Regional competition brought us to 2nd Place and an invitation to participate in the NY State SciOly Competition. Our three teams also brought home a total of 69 individual event medals. It was our most successful year yet! The State Competition will be held in Syracuse, NY over April 7, 8 & 9, 2017 and fifteen of our top team members will be looking to break into the top 10 (we were 15th overall out of over 260 middle schools in NY State last year) and maybe even come close to reaching “national” status! Could this be our year? We think yes!!
